Most articles on this topic explain what marketing services exist. This one does something different: it helps you understand which of those services makes sense for your business right now, and which ones are filler added to justify the price.

The real problem with marketing packages is not that agencies are bad. It is that packages are designed to be easy to sell, not to solve specific business problems. A local service business that just launched its website has a completely different problem from an ecommerce store with traffic but poor conversion rates.

Before talking about what a package should include, you need to understand one thing that changes the entire conversation.

The marketing budget most small businesses have is too small for anything to work

Insufficient marketing budget for small businesses

Many small businesses spend less than $1,000 a year on marketing. That is less than $85 a month. With that budget, no channel can be executed properly: it is too little for SEO with real results, too little for a paid search campaign to become profitable, and too little for thoughtful social media management.

That point is not here to create guilt. It is here because the first mistake when evaluating a marketing package is trying to make everything fit inside a budget that does not have enough critical mass to work. The predictable result is buying something cheap that moves nothing, concluding that “digital marketing does not work for my business,” and quitting.

The right question is not “what can I afford?” It is “how much do I need to invest for this to work, and which specific channel should receive that investment?”

Useful benchmarks depend on the stage of the business. Businesses in maintenance mode that only want to protect their current position may need around 5% of gross revenue. Established businesses with five or more years of history that want steady growth often sit around 7% to 10%. Newer businesses in their first three years, with no built-up reputation or accumulated organic traffic, often need closer to 12% to 15% because they have to buy visibility. These are not fixed rules. They are a way to judge whether the budget you have in mind has a real chance of working.

Tu presupuesto current parece demasiado bajo para ejecutar bien este objetivo. Mejor concentrar el dinero en un solo canal antes que comprar un paquete pequeño.

How to distribute that budget (and why it matters more than the services you choose)

How to distribute an online marketing budget for a small business

A useful rule from companies that get better returns from marketing is the 70/20/10 model.

Put 70% of the budget into channels you already know work for your business. If local SEO brings customers, most of the budget goes there. If Google Ads has a profitable cost per acquisition, it goes there. Do not experiment with this money.

Put 20% into testing new things: a channel you have not explored, a different content format, or a campaign on a platform where your customers spend time but where you have not been active. The test needs a defined budget, a defined time limit, and clear metrics for deciding whether to scale it or cut it.

Put the remaining 10% into brand-building assets that cannot be automated or easily copied: original photography of your business, participation in industry events, customer stories, or content where you appear as the person behind the company. In 2026, when any agency can generate generic content in minutes, the thing that differentiates you is what cannot be manufactured.

This matters more than the list of services in the package because most businesses that do not see marketing ROI do not have a channel problem. They have a concentration problem. They are present in too many places with too little budget in each one.

The services that should be in any package

Core services every online marketing package should include

Regardless of the industry or the stage of the business, some elements are not optional.

Technical website audit. A website that loads slowly, fails on mobile, or cannot be crawled properly by Google cancels out any marketing investment you put on top of it. Most consumers check online before choosing a local business. If the site is not in good condition, marketing sends traffic to a door that does not open properly. Tools like the Wisseo SEO audit help identify the technical issues that should be fixed before spending money elsewhere.

Local SEO or organic SEO, depending on the scope of the business. For most small businesses with a geographic customer base, local SEO is one of the highest-return channels over the medium term: no cost per click, continuous traffic, and results that accumulate over time. A serious package includes Google Business Profile optimization, NAP consistency across relevant directories, and content targeting keywords with commercial search intent. If your reach is national, the strategy changes, but SEO remains one of the most profitable long-term organic channels.

Review management. Reviews are not a marketing trend. They are documented buying behavior. A package that does not include a system for asking happy customers for reviews and managing negative ones is ignoring one of the factors that most influences the final decision. This is not just replying to comments. It is having a systematic process for requesting reviews at the right moment.

Reporting with metrics that answer business questions. Not a traffic report. A report that answers: how many people reached your website from each channel, how many took a concrete action such as calling, buying, or filling out a form, what changed from last month, and why? Without that, it is impossible to know what is working and what needs to change.

The services that depend on your specific business

Marketing services that depend on your specific business model

This is where many packages add filler, because adding more services makes the price easier to justify.

Social media. It makes sense if your customers use social platforms to discover businesses like yours, or if what you sell has a visual component that works in that format. A home remodeling company with strong before-and-after photos can make Instagram work. A local HVAC contractor probably does not need three generic posts a week. What never makes sense is paying for social posting with no measurable goal and no growth strategy behind it.

Google Ads and paid media. Paid search is the fastest way to generate results, but it is also the channel that burns budget fastest when managed poorly. It makes sense when SEO has not had time to produce results and you need customers now, or when there are high-intent keywords with manageable cost per click. The common management fee is a percentage of ad spend, often around 15% to 20%. If an agency charges $300 a month to manage $500 in ad spend, there is a problem: either the budget is too small for the campaign to work, or the management is too shallow to justify the fee. Below about $1,000 in monthly ad spend, ads are often hard to make profitable after management fees.

Email marketing. This is underrated for businesses that already have customers. If you have one hundred past customers, a well-designed email sequence can convert better than most acquisition campaigns. If you are starting from zero with no list, it is a long-term asset to build, not a channel that will produce major results in the next three months.

Content creation. Content has real return when there is enough volume and when it targets keywords with actual search demand. One article a month without a strategy moves nothing. Twelve well-targeted articles can generate organic traffic for years. If the package includes “content creation” without specifying how many pieces, how long they are, which keywords they target, and what measurable goal they support, it is not a deliverable. It is a placeholder. The Wisseo keyword research tool helps identify which terms have real search volume before deciding what to write about.

What the agency should never do with your money

Agency red flags when buying online marketing services

There are signals that separate an agency that works well from one that charges for looking busy.

Restrict access to your own accounts. If the agency manages your Google Ads or Analytics, you should have admin access to those accounts at all times. When an agency refuses direct client access, it is usually because it does not want the client to see what is, or is not, happening behind the scenes. If the relationship ends, all historical data, campaign history, and account access should stay with you, not with the agency.

Launch ads without conversion tracking. Putting ad budget into campaigns without measuring which actions they generate is the same as throwing money away without knowing where it lands. Without properly configured conversions, there is no way to optimize the campaign or know whether it is working. It is one of the most expensive and common mistakes.

Promise guaranteed Google rankings. No agency can guarantee organic positions. Search algorithms are black boxes that change constantly. Anyone promising “number one in 30 days” is either lying or planning to use tactics that may work briefly and damage the site later.

Show vanity metrics as achievements. Social impressions, total visits without context, or rankings for keywords nobody searches are not results. A ranking report showing that you appear in position 47 for twenty irrelevant keywords says nothing useful. The Wisseo rank tracker helps monitor the real performance of the keywords that matter, using verified search volume.

How much a reasonable package costs

Reasonable cost of an online marketing package for a small business

Ranges are broad because service levels vary a lot, but there are useful reference points.

For a local business: basic SEO, Google Business Profile optimization, review management, and monthly reporting. A reasonable range is often $500 to $1,500 per month. Below $500, either the work is superficial or the agency has too many clients to give you real attention.

For a more complete package: SEO, social media on two platforms, Google Ads management with ad spend billed separately, and detailed reporting. A reasonable range is often $1,500 to $3,500 per month plus the advertising budget.

Packages that start at $200 or $300 per month almost always include automated tools and software-generated reports, not real human work. If the proposal does not specify how many hours of work are behind it each month, ask. The answer is usually revealing.

One cost many people forget: marketing tools accumulate. Many businesses end up paying $500 to $2,000 per month in overlapping software subscriptions. It is worth taking inventory of what you already pay for before adding anything new.

How to know whether the package you are offered is right for your stage

How to know whether an online marketing package fits your current stage

There is one distinction that makes any proposal much easier to evaluate.

What specific business problem are you trying to solve? Not “I want more digital marketing.” Say: “I want people to find me when someone in my city searches for what I offer.” Or: “I have traffic, but almost nobody buys.” Or: “My customers do not come back, and I do not know why.”

Each of those problems points to a different solution. The first points to local SEO and Google Ads. The second points to website conversion and possibly email marketing. The third points to retention and post-sale relationship management.

Once the problem is defined that way, evaluating a proposal becomes more direct: does this package solve this specific problem with concrete deliverables in a reasonable time frame? If the answer is not clear, the package probably was not built for your situation.

Four questions any serious agency should be able to answer without hesitation:

What are the concrete deliverables each month? Not the services in the package, but the deliverables: how many articles, how many technical optimizations, and how often ads are reviewed.

Which metrics define success, and over what time frame? SEO often takes three to six months to show meaningful results. If someone promises results in four weeks, they are either lying or using tactics that can hurt you long term.

What happens if results do not arrive within the agreed time frame? Good agencies have no problem committing to strategy reviews when the numbers do not move.

Can you access the ad and analytics accounts at any time, and what happens to that data if the relationship ends?

That last question is the one that makes agencies with something to hide uncomfortable. That tells you a lot.
